RopeCon® and Cableway Expertise

REM is closely affiliated with the Doppelmayr/Garaventa group and is a Partner in the Southern African region for Doppelmayr Transport Technology GmbH of Austria. Through 19 years of close collaboration with Doppelmayr, REM has the experience of the technology to review, conceive and develop RopeCon® and Cableway projects in Southern Africa.

The Doppelmayr /Garaventa Group is the incomparable leader in cable transport technology having over 14,400 installations worldwide. Their portfolio of products is extensive and we invite you to explore them at http://www.doppelmayr.com/. Doppelmayr is the Expert and will undertake the full design and execution of the Cable technology solution within the overall project.

There are few key technologies which are revolutionising the bulk materials transport business. The RopeCon® system is a significant advancement in transport technology. It is the primary focus of our work. We highlight the technology on this page and welcome your enquiries.

RopeCon® Conveyor System for bulk material handling

The RopeCon® system is a continuous conveyor for all types of bulk material. The systems can be short length as well or cover long distances of up to 20 km per section.

Capacities can be up to 10 000 tons per hour and the belt can run at angles up to 75 degrees.

The payload is carried on a flat conveyor belt which has corrugated side walls. Axles with polymide wheels on each end are attached across the belt at regular intervals and support the belt. The wheels run on the support ropes.

The track ropes support the wheels in motion. The ropes run over towers in a similar way to Ropeways and are anchored at the ends. Spans between towers vary with the topography and design requirements. The longest span to-date is 1200 m between supports. This system can be built to cross over impassable terrain, rivers, motorways and buildings without any difficulty.

The RopeCon® system is a proven technology with several distinct advantages:

    • Low power usage, with lower operating & maintenance costs

    • Improved Safety regime

    • High availability (92% to 95% proven usage) of the operating system

    • High security of payloads en-route

    • Ecology friendly with low impact on the area. Minimum damage to environment during construction and operations.

    • Very low noise levels and no carbon emissions in operation

    • Negligible interface with local infrastructure (roads, pathways, rail lines etc) and Public movement.

    • Normal maintenance done only at either end station

The system is a custom-made solution to every transport problem. For a list of successful projects and more information about RopeCon® worldwide, please visit this page.

Other Specialist Technologies

Cableways and Ropeways - Passenger, Unit loads & Material Transport

The Ropeway system provides an economic alternative for Passenger, Material and combined transport. These systems are purpose designed but provide a significantly reduced foot-print and interface with other surrounding infrastructure.

Passenger cableways are proven around the world as economic, safe and quality transport systems. These units are applicable in mass transport up to 5000 persons per hour or low capacity operations and tourism.

Material Ropeway systems can transport up to 1500 tons/hour or single loads of up to 40 tons even in rough and difficult terrain and have only a very small impact on the environment. Spans of up to 1,500 m and gradients of 90 % can be surmounted without any problem.

Track mounted Elevated Carriage System - Container / Vehicle Transport & storage system

The modern track mounted carriage system developed by MAX BOGL - the TSB Cargo System - is the latest advancement for handling of Containers, units from quay side in ports, through stockyards, sorting areas and transfer off site.

PUBLIC MASS TRANSPORT SYSTEMS

REM has identified the Mass People Transport sector in Africa as an important field for the development of the continent. As such, the introduction of specially designed Mass Transport systems using cableway technology has become a game-changer in urban development.

This system is operating in a number of countries around the world and provides cheaper, safer and faster urban transport.

The system has

  • been installed and commissioned in significantly less time than conventional systems

  • significantly reduced / removed the physical clash with other services, roads, housing and facilities,

  • reduced the immediate and ongoing enviromental impact such as carbon footprint , noise levels,

  • shortened travel time dramatically

  • improved safety and security

  • reduced cost to operator and passengers

STUDIES SHOW THAT THIS OPTION IS A "MUST" FOR AFRICAN METROPOLITAN AREAS AND CITIES to reduce Capital costs and then the fare prices to the passengers.

The world´s biggest Urban Ropeway network

La Paz and El Alto in Bolivia is the showcase project. This whole system was designed and installed by Doppelmayr Seilbahne. The Ropeway system uses 1,396 detachable 10-passenger gondola cabins on 10 lines in service. There is a total length of approx. 33 km. running between 26 stations.

Number of passengers carried:

Daily average: 250,000 to 300,000 passengers

Total: May 2014 to March 2019: almost 200 million passengers

TOURIST CABLEWAYS and ROPEWAYS

People transport using cable-supported systems have been used worldwide for centuries. Doppelmayr and Garaventa have 100 years experience as the technology experts with a world-wide reputation for top class products, quality and safety standards. Their portfolio of over 14,400 installations covers a range of sizes and capacities, different systems and cable configurations all adapted to the Client needs.

Cable ways are used in Tourism, Urban transport infrastructure, Construction work and access to isolated points such as lookout points, fire watch stations and light houses.

Projects within South African include

  • the Table Mountain Cableway upgrade

  • the Skycar funicular unit on the Moses Madiba Stadium in Durban as part of the 2010 World Cup developments

  • The Euphoria Golf Estate cableway.

REM is able to review and recommend the most suitable type of system to Clients, to suit their development plans.

Material Transport - Unit Loads - Cableways

The payload of materials or unit loads is carried on cableways in open or closed buckets - or on purpose-made carriers. The buckets can be loaded and unloaded automatically.

The Cableways have provide a significantly reduced foot-print and interface with other surrounding infrastructure. Steep profiles and long spans are easily managed and a combination of buckets and passenger cabins have been used for general access of "Men & Materials".

Container & Vehicle Transport - TSB Cargo

This is modern technology developed by TSB Cargo. The containers are loaded onto carriages which are elevated off and guided within the tracks using magnetism.

The track profiles can vary horizontally and vertically to provide access to quaysides, stockyards and outloading systems with minimal clash with existing infrastructure, roads and rail. This flexibility allows the system to be incorporated into existing infrastructure with minimal disruption in construction and operation. The systems operate safely and speedily in varying weather conditions
