RopeCon® for the Booysendal expansion project

Booysendal Platinum (Pty) Limited (Booysendal), a subsidiary of Northam Platinum Limited (Northam), a South African based platinum and chrome producer, is currently expanding mining capacity at its Booysendal mining concession.

As part of the surface infrastructure development, the first fully operational RopeCon® materials handling system was completed, tested and handed over in December 2018 to the mine by Doppelmayr Transport Technology GmbH (Doppelmayr), headquartered in Austria and a subsidiary of the Doppelmayr group.

REM Construction Consultants is proud to be the Agent and Partner of Doppelmayr Transport Technology for Southern Africa and having been involved in this project.

The main RopeCon® unit (No 1) transports up to 1,150 tph over 4.76km, with an overall vertical climb of 530m. At the delivery end the payload is transferred either to the conveyor feeding the process plant or diverts the payload to a second RopeCon® (No.2). This RopeCon® is a small unit which delivers the ore to a stockpile for storage.

The whole system has been operating since December 2019 to date meeting and beating the design specifications, and costs - more importantly the Client has confirmed this successful system.

Doppelmayr Transport Technology GmbH of Austria and a subsidiary of the Doppelmayr group, was contracted to design and construct a RopeCon® system which will transport up to 900 tph over 4.9km, with an overall vertical climb of 503m.
